The Icelandic Seal Center (ISC) is today, an educational and Science museum, information center in the Region, research center, and travel agency the Seal Travel. Icelandic Seal center is in Hvammstangi in peninsula Vatnsnes.
Icelandic Seal Center was orginally established on the 29th of April 2005 and is owned by the community. The founders are a group of individuals interested in further reinforcement of sustainable tourism in Hunathing west region. The Icelandic Seal Center was in the minds of those who were responsible for tools for progress and community strengthening.
The Icelandic Seal Center’s research department formally began operations in 2009. The department has five full-time specialists as well as assistants and research students who are hired on projects, especially during the summer. The department operates in three areas; Seal Research Department, Tourism Research Departmnet and Department of Natural Sciences. One of the Icelandic Seal Center’s main objectives is to strengthen research connected to seals and nature based tourism, both in the Húnaþing vestur region as well as nationally and internationally.
The key partners of ISC are the Marine and Freshwater Research Institure in collaboration with the Ministry of Food, Agricultre and Fisherises. Hólar University in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation. Natural Institue of Northwest Iceland. Community of Húnaþing vestra. Association of community in the Northwest of Iceland and Tourism associtation in Hunathing west region.
